Fall? Really!
The calendar says it's fall. I guess it is. Time to face facts. I need to take the summer porch flag in and put out the fall one. I'm trying to get excited about this change in seasons and I figure if I spruce up my porch, maybe I can trick myself into it! This is the first time in my life that I have a real "porch" - so there's no excuse for me not to decorate. I need some mums and pumpkins to make it look "fall-ish".
In other rambles, we are expecting a nor'easter. Schools are closed, all after school activities have been cancelled, etc. The ocean is wild! Foam blows everywhere when you are out there and there is no beach. Of course, this, too, shall pass and the next storm will give us back our sand. The vacationers are not too happy to have chosen this week to visit the Outer Banks.
The locally filmed movie, Nights in Rodanthe opens Friday night! I'm excited - but not excited enough to stand in line for hours:) We are going next week during the week provided we can get tickets. It's exciting to see footage on the big screen that is so close to home!
oh - and Richard Gere isn't chopped liver either:)

My Cat Family
After spending $60 in Fancy Feast today, I decided to post about my cat family. I'm madly in love with all of them and there is nothing I wouldn't do for any of them (well, I wouldn't donate a kidney...) but they surely do cause me to spend an inordinate about of time sucking up hair!
Here they are in order of age:
Nate, my oldest, is 12. He's a gorgeous black and white man with the most gentile attitude of any cat I've known. Nothing stresses him out! He is not a lap cat but he does like to be near you all the time and sometimes touching which just makes me smile:) He is a big manly cat but extremely rarely does he show that side of him. He's just one giant pussycat and I love him to death.
Ruby - she's my orange girl. Very feral except at mealtime and then she thinks my husband and I are complete idiots as she's all over us, rubbing and meowing in that sweet little voice. Ruby is a full figured woman and loves loves loves her food! She is 8 and I'm sad to say, will never enjoy being petted as she was 5 months old when I took her in from the streets. She is a happy girl though so if she doesn't want to have human contact, that's fine with me. I love her just the same.
Lurch - oh where to start about dear Lurchie. He got his name because all he really does is make primal grunts. Lurchie really was born as the product of incest I'll bet. He came off the streets and I got him to give dear Ruby some company. Lurch is a solid black boy who had had a chronic illness (IBD) his whole life. He may not live as long as a "normal" cat but he is so special to me and I'm so glad he's part of our cat family! PS Lurchie is 8 just like Ruby.
Jazzer Dingleberry - oh Jazzer - what can I say? The Jazzman is 6 and he is one total panther full of piss and vinegar! Jazzer came to us as a foster kitten. He was feral but had tamed up well (so we thought!). He got adopted, stayed a week (the other cat in the house hated him and it stressed his new parents out terribly) so we took him back to foster him again. You know how that went. Yep. Still here. Jazzer was fine until we kept adding to our feline family. Seems he is the jealous type. He picks a cat to terrorize and will stop at nothing until they are beaten down and petrified! We have literally tried everything on the market (Feliway, Rescue Remedy, plus prescription drugs) and the thing that works the best for him is Prozac. Unfortunately, he is super hard to medicate so we don't always get it in him. THOSE days - I just warn my cats that there is an extremely pissed off black panther patrolling the house and to steer clear! Jazzer upsets my whole family but you know, what do I do? I wouldn't give him up if he were a human child and had an attitude. We just try to steer the other cats clear of his path on his unmedicated days and hope for the best.
Reesie - Poor little girl, she's my tortie and has the tortie attitude to go with it! She was brought to our adoption stand in a box as a stray kitten. The people who found her thought she was a male and named her "Reese". I brought her home to foster and when my husband opened up the box, he gasped. REALLY. Reesie is just - well, how can a mother say this - she is butt ugly:) My husband calls her BUG for butt ugly girl. She doesn't have the best disposition (yes, I think I have mostly dysfunctional cats) but she's ours and we love her just the same (even though her momma was probably a possum.). She is 5.
Emma - oh gosh - a true calico! Can you believe I have both a tortie and a calico living in the same house - talk about perpetual PMS!!! Miss Emma was a stray, she was found living in a recycle bin. She was brought in to a foster home as an adult. I found out why she was probably abandoned shortly after I made her mine. She is a pee'er. Yep. Totally an emotional pisser. Never does it unless she is mad or upset (due to lack of 24/7 attention by ME!). So - I've invested in lots of carpet cleaner, plastic covers for the beds, etc. and Emma is here to stay with her calico attitude and all. Oh and she HATES other cats. She's also 5.
Frankie - the "Frankster" is the one most often the subject of Jazzer's attacks. Frankie wasn't the sweetest cat ever to begin with (another black feral kitten foster) but he is probably even more timid than he would normally have been. He's sweet when he can grow some gonads but he sort of hangs in the background and has one or two "buds" he hangs with. Frankie is a gorgeous 4 year old black man!
Dannielynn - aka Dani. Miss Dannielynn came to us as a foster in the midst of the Anna Nicole story so we named her after her daughter. Dannielynn is SUPER sweet (we deserve her!!) and is so very happy. She loves everyone, especially the men of the house, and she can always find someone to bathe her! She is a positively gorgeous brown tabby with the roundest face you've ever seen. She is about 2 years old and we are madly in love with her and the love she brings to this otherwise strange cat family!

Hurricane Hanna Watching and Waiting
Hurricane Watching
Just sitting here doing a little hurricane watching. It's my first OBX one and although I am not at all happy about the possible devastation of our lovely island, I have to admit, I'm a tad excited. Wish I were at Sunset Bar though - having a nice parrot drink:)Anywhoo - thought I'd blog about some "lists" today since I can't get out and have some free time!
Some of my favorite things in no particular order:
- memories of my mom (most were good - she was an AWESOME mom)
- beaches (any of them)
- sun (it's my vitamin - truly - I get seasonal affective disorder without it)
- my friends (I am very lucky, I have made some wonderful friends in my lifetime)
- cats (love to do cat rescue and volunteer helping them in any capacity)
- animals in general (love animals much better than most people)
- my husband (this list is in no order obviously as he is the love of my life!)
- birthday, carrot and cheesecake (and vanilla ice cream!)
- houses that smell good (cinnamon, clove, pumpkin type smells)
- living in OBX and all its small town magic
- my job (I really do enjoy it and most of the people there also)
- Nascar racing (TV isn't one of my passions but I do love watching racing and Sunday football too!)

Upcoming Labor Day Holiday
I admit it. I have seasonal affective disorder. I have known I had it all my life - even as a small child I hated winter. Yet this year, it's worse - much worse. Could be due to my recent hysterectomy and lack of any semblance of estrogen in my body, eh? I think it's actually due to a combination of things. For the first time in my life, I am living in a beach town. It's awesome. A dream. I feel so lucky to live here. But with that, it hits me in the face even more that, well, Labor Day is really the end of the summer. Oh sure, we'll have some wonderful days in September and October. But symbolically, it's the end of the "season". Stores here have CHRISTMAS things - yes, really!! Freaks me out. I mean, people - this is still AUGUST. I just really dread the long winter. It's very stark and deserted here in the winter. There are few places open and if they do stay open, they close by 5. So for me, they might at well be closed since I'm a workin' gal.
I have seriously thought about getting a SAD light - just to see if it helps. I'm already on medication which, obviously isn't worth the $70 copay I'm shelling out!! Guess it's time to try a new approach to this dark season in my life. See - I'm not even able to enjoy fall and the wonderful accompanying crisp mornings and evenings because I DREAD the dark dreary days of boring ho hum yawn winter. I have been mulling over in my head how to work on this problem and here's what I've come up with:
Okay - 'nuff bi*chin. I am going to focus more on the positives of living at the beach because even with SAD, I'm livin' a dream. I so love this place!! Happy Weekend everyone!

I have been mulling over in my head how to work on this problem and here's what I've come up with:
- check into the SAD light
- plan an outing each day - no matter how small, just to "connect" with someone (I work from home so seeing another human besides my husband is a treat)
- plan a BIG outing on weekends - go to a local festival, pig pickin', nice day trip, ETC - just something to do for a large chunk of time on weekends
- have lots of friends visit this winter - there are very very few places open to shop but it can still be fun just to hang with my buds
- volunteer! I have been fostering homeless kitties and I plan to continue - and possibly volunteer time at the local animal shelter this winter - what better way not to feel blue than to pet a few furry friends and make their lives a little brighter?
- get a dog. my husband and I have decided that it's the right time in our lives to devote attention and love to a rescue dog so I've put the word out that should a cat friendly one become available for adoption to please let us know! I need to make myself walk and what better way than to be accompanied by a buddy?
- cook! it's something I rarely do but making chili or spaghetti sauce or muffins is therapeutic to me when it's cold outside.
